Hey, did you hear about that woman from Carlisle who got busted for running a brothel? Her name is Ana Stefan and she’s 29 years old. She was in court today and she confessed to three crimes related to sex trafficking. She had a translator with her because she doesn’t speak English very well.
She said she helped two other women travel to work as prostitutes and she also made money from their activities. She was supposed to have a trial but she changed her mind and pleaded guilty instead. Her lawyer said they had some talks with the prosecutors and agreed on some details of her case.
But there’s still some stuff they need to sort out before she gets sentenced. I wonder what will happen to her next. What do you think?
With a up interpreter’s help, Stefan confessed to two crimes of helping two other women travel for exploitation purposes.
She also pleaded guilty to a charge of managing prostitution for profit, by intentionally overseeing the prostitution activities of other people anywhere in the world. The charge says she did this to get money or benefits for herself or someone else.
Defence lawyer Andrew Gurney said that they had made significant progress in talks with the prosecution since the previous hearing.
A document sent to the court explained the exact reasons for Stefan’s guilty pleas. “There are some issues to be sorted out regarding that reason for pleading,” said Mr Gurney.
So the prosecutor wanted some time to figure out how big of a role Stefan had in the whole thing. Was she the boss or just a worker? The judge said OK and told her to come back next week. He let her go home for now but he made sure she couldn’t run away.
He took her passport and told her not to leave the country or buy any tickets for anyone else. He also made her stay at her current address. I guess he doesn’t want her to disappear before he decides what to do with her.
