Oxford Escorting in the News

2nd February 2019 SU creates the survey for “vulnerable” student sex-workers

Oxford’s student sex workers are being asked whether the University is doing enough to ensure their safety and wellbeing in a new survey initiated by the Students’ Union. They have created a 43 question survey which asks questions about how sex work has affected their self-esteem, how they advertise. The response has been good and should give an indication of what sex work is happening in the university. The National Union of Students (NUS)has conducted similar surveys, and there was also a three-year project along similar lines in Wales.

Oxford Sex Work News

Thames Valley Police recently made headlines for their actions in Oxford, where a man and a woman were apprehended on suspicion of running a brothel at a property in Brasenose Drift Way. The arrests were made following reports of antisocial behavior and criminal activities in the area, prompting officers from the Cowley neighborhood policing team to intervene on Sunday, February 11.

The 25-year-old woman and 43-year-old man, both residents of Oxford, were taken into custody while measures were taken to "safeguard" others present at the location. They were subsequently arrested on suspicion of maintaining a brothel used for prostitution and have been released on bail, pending further investigation.

In addition to the arrests, Thames Valley Police secured a closure order for the property through the courts. Closure orders empower local authorities or law enforcement agencies to promptly shut down premises where illegal activities or disturbances are reportedly occurring.

Situated in Brasenose Drift Way, just off Horspath Road near Hollow Way in the Cowley district of Oxford, the property in question has been subjected to heightened scrutiny in light of these events. A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police emphasized that the closure order aims to curb criminal behavior and minimize disruptions for nearby residents.

"This closure order," the spokesperson stated, "aims to deter criminal activity and mitigate disturbances for the surrounding community. It prohibits access to the premises and acts as a deterrent against antisocial behavior."

Those found violating the closure order will face arrest and subsequent legal proceedings, as warned by the police spokesperson.

Individuals with concerns regarding the actions taken by Thames Valley Police are encouraged to reach out to the authorities for clarification or further information.

"Oi, there's been a fair bit of flak aimed at OnlyFans models Bonnie Blue, 24, and Leilani May, 25, for getting high school grads involved in their adult content creation.

These Aussie OnlyFans celebs copped criticism for inviting young fellas to join in making some explicit stuff. They're keen on getting the Schoolies – you know, the recent high school graduates here in Oz – in on their action. But heaps of folks reckon it's a dodgy move.

For those not in the loop, Schoolies Week is a big deal for Aussie grads, a time for them to kick back and party hard at some top-notch holiday spots across the country. Surfers Paradise up in Queensland's Gold Coast is a ripper spot for it, with its pumping nightlife and stunning beaches.

Word got out that these two models asked recent grads to rock up at Surfers Paradise for their adult content shoot.

Brit lass Bonnie Blue fired back at the reports, saying the school leavers actually hit them up first. She told the Gold Coast Bulletin: “We started getting messages like, ‘I'll be there for Schoolies, let's shoot content,' and we chuckled – we usually worked with established creators, but then we thought, ‘Why not?’”

She made it clear that she and May made sure anyone working with them was legally adults: "They're not underage; we check IDs, follow a process – they're consenting and sign consent forms," she added.

Meanwhile, Aussie May said, “It’s all up to them and what they're comfy with. They take part, we practise safe sex, and we, as sex workers, get checked every couple of weeks.”

But plenty of others are worried about the long-term impact of being involved in such content.

Matt Lloyd, CEO of schoolies.com, had this to say to the Gold Coast Bulletin: "Our advice to all Schoolies is, you deserve to have a good time with your mates, but think twice before making a decision that might affect your family, your rep, and your future prospects.”

However, Blue and May reckon those who join in don't need to show their faces.

The models put out a joint statement to our mates at LADbible about their take on the situation: "We're stoked to highlight making authentic and relatable content with real people. We're keen to keep this adult content vibe going and take it to spring break in the US and freshers week in the UK."

There is a confusing contradiction when it comes to the legality of sex work in the UK. While the act of prostitution itself is not illegal, a variety of activities fundamental to the industry, such as prostitutes working together or attempting to advertise themselves, are listed criminal offences. Although prostitution are often greatly removed from the real experiences of sex workers, in this panel, we aim to understand what changes and protections are needed by listening to those who know the industry best.

Speakers:

Miranda Kane

Writer, Performer, Comedian, Raconteuse and former sex worker

Helena Croft

Director of Streetlight UK and Former Local Parliament Politician and Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservative Party

Hayley Speed

Assistant Director of Services at akt, an LGBTQ Youth Homelessness support charity and former Head of Social Care at ‘The Men’s Room’

Bea Piper

Spokeswoman for the English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP): an organisation of sex workers working on the street and in premises with a national network throughout the UK, who campaign for the decriminalisation of prostitution and for sex workers’ rights and safety

Desperate students selling sex to make ends meet are behind a surge of pleas for help to the “prostitutes’ union”.

The English Collective of Prostitutes said calls to its helpline from young people at university and college have risen by a third in 2021.

And the campaigning group has seen a surge in the numbers selling sex since lockdowns sent student finances into freefall.

Many sell explicit pictures of themselves on sites like OnlyFans as traditional bar and shop jobs have dried up.

Now as many as eight students a day are calling for support and advice. And some universities are publishing guides on how to safely sell your body.

Laura Watson, a spokeswoman for the group, said: “We have seen a significant increase in students going into prostitution as tuition fees have increased.

A new council report has revealed the latest count of sex workers in the city, 13 years after Oxford City Council to set up a specific task force to tackle a rise in prostitution.

The most recent data, collected between December 2016 and July 2018, found that there were 46 known sex workers in the city.

A newly-released report, which detailed the statistic, states: “The prevalence of sex work is believed to have risen alongside austerity, benefit sanctions, and increased housing costs.

The city's illegal sex trade has now mostly moved from the streets to behind closed doors, authorities say.

Prostitution has evolved purely from street work to a vast network of websites and online escort services.

One particular site listed more than 160 results for escorts in Oxfordshire.

Mr Chapman said there has been a decline in the number of identified sex workers in Oxford since 2007, but that the number of off-street sex workers is 'unknown'.
