There are two employment types for escorts. The escort who works for an agency.  The agency takes the booking and contacts the escort and passes this information to the escort. The escort makes their own way there, though some agencies may handle this with a driver. Employing a driver can introduce legal issues for the agency.  The payment is usually collected by the escort, who will then pass on a fee to the agency.

There is another type of escort, and that is the independent escort. The independent escort markets herself directly to clients. She does this with the aid of classified advertisements, her website and also the use of escort directories. She will be contacted directly by the potential client, there may be a negotiation of services at this stage, a time and location agreed. Payment is made directly to the escort, usually in cash. Some escorts will also want a deposit made by bank transfer before the date. This is to deter time wasters who are not committed to the booking. The Universites are being positive in providing saftey advice. No one denies that selling sexual services can be dangerous. The attitude of sweeping it under the carpet, and criminilising those involved (buying or selling) make the work even more dangerous.  Rather tham implementing the Noridic Model as proposed by Anna Fisher of Nordic Model Now! (nordicmodelnow.org).

A total decriminilisation is called for. Peer reviewed research in sex work comes out positively on the benefits of decriminilisation as implemented in New Zealand and New South Wales. The Nordic Model Now have a few people who have worked in the sex industry who fight for the end of the sex industry. This is opposed to the hundreds of thousands working in it now.

Durham, Newcastle and Manchester are the only Russell Group universities that have policies in place to support their students who work in the sex industry. There is an estimate that there are 214,200 student sex workers. That does sound high to me, but not all those student sex workers would be student escorts.

It is a pity that other Universities do not provide advice to those who are sex workers. Advice on STIs, the law, and organisations they can turn to for help.

Outside the Russell Group unis, Leicester University released the Student Sex Work Toolkit. The safety resource includes details for staff on how to communicate with students about their sex work and signposting of further sources of information. They also outline a guide on the legalities of sex work and tips for students to keep themselves safe.

None of this is encouragement to students to work as escorts, but rather to help those who already work in the sex industry to be safe.

For many women working the streets of Manchester during the coronavirus pandemic, clients have been their only regular human contact.

For one day in December, a group of women were able to sit, laugh and share stories with each other and their caseworkers over a hearty, socially-distanced Christmas dinner.

For 12 years I worked as an escort, I also did occasional phone & cam work. I varied between working full time and part time, but around half was full time and the other half part time.

I've been put off doing one of these because of how they usually go but I'm always banging on about people making assumptions about sex workers and accepting stereotypes about us so I might as well.

To be clear, this is a thread for people who want to ask questions, not for people who just want to make a point about sex work or sex workers.

For dozens of sex workers in Manchester it’s still ‘business as usual’ during the coronavirus crisis. The women continuing to work the city’s streets are at the ‘sharpest end of vulnerability’, living through chaotic and unstable situations. In the early weeks of the outbreak many women were able to secure temporary accommodation in hotels. Those with drug habits managed to get prescriptions for methadone to try and beat their addictions. But there are some who are continuing to work throughout the pandemic despite the risks, and it is these women that Manchester Action on Street Health (MASH) are still trying to help.

Officers were called to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman at Dallas Court, off Langworthy Road, in Salford, at around 7.30am on Saturday May 2. Enquiries then established that she was a victim of modern slavery.
